WNU-Engineering Bags YP’s Design Challenge

WNU’s College of Engineering claimed the Best Design Award in the recently conducted Young Professionals National Camp initiated by the Young Professionals Association for Sustainable Habitat Philippines is initiating a Young Professionals National Camp held at APTC-2, Translink Highway, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental. 

The competition was represented by 5 Civil Engineering students with Engr. Rey Ramos with an entry on recyclable plastic mineral water bottles as substitute for hollow blocks, five (5) gallons plastic mineral water container as septic tank and 1.5 liters soft drink bottles utilized as columns for the proposed residential units for more affordable housing unit. 

This year’s camp activity with the theme “Urban Livability and Earth-based Technical Solutions: YP Advocacy Integration into Higher Education” was organized in cooperation with JF Ledesma Foundation Inc. (JFLFI), and Asian Rural-Urban Development & Peace Institute, Inc. (ARDEP) to make them aware on the importance of urban livability and technical solutions among academic communities; identify the role and importance of Higher Education in Urban Development and Livability ; instill the importance and direction of Disaster Risk adaptation in Community Designs and Shelter delivery; and update the new features of earth-based technology and application with fabricated production equipment as support system, among others.  

Furthermore, the thrust of the 3-day camp is to provide a venue for discussion of current and possible housing policies and at the same time afford a means by which Young Professionals could establish working relationships. 

Other activities include: Symposium on Synergism, Development & Human Resource: The YP Operational Framework conducted by Mr. Greg Forbes, former CIDA Monitor; Role of Higher Education Institution in Urban Development  with panelists: Dr. Freddie Maningo, President, Central Philippine State University (CPSU) – higher education, Dr. Nestor Abdon, ARDEP Managing Director- institutional policy, Prof. Louie Gonzaga, ARDEP Program Dean- academic community, Prof. Daniel Mostrales, Professor-MSU-IIT/YP National Coordinator and  Arch. Arlene Lusterio, Executive Director-Tao Pilipinas, Inc. - Alternative Engineering & Alternative Architecture Design and Mr. Reynic Alo, Executive Director, MUAD-Negros – Urban Food Security. 

WNU’s delegates bagged the Best Design Award among five other entries from different colleges and universities in Negros Occidental.*
