Behind Baclao's #7...
Siverino "Nonoy" Baclao

“Seven is Sir Tony’s favorite number and it’s the same number I used in my jersey.”

A proud statement made by University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 71 Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) Siverino “Nonoy” Baclao when he re-visited his alma mater last October 24, 2008.

“It is my way of thanking West Negros University and the person who has become a brother to me, Sir Tony Agustin,” expressed Nonoy Baclao in front of the school’s administration, faculty, staff and giggling students who have become an addition to his thousands of fans nationwide.

He was once just a face in the crowd, a gangly teenager who found himself relishing the hard-court playing for the Mustangs.

Baclao believed that there is no secret in his success only the belief in his capacity to be victorious in every endeavor because according to him he continues to bring along with him the school’s byword, “Im Wesnecan, I can”.

Every time Baclao gets home he never fails to pay a visit to WNU-Integrated School where he took his secondary education and graduated with honors. Furthermore, he advised the youth not to forget where they came from and have that thankful heart for the blessings they receive each day.

He remembers his Mustang days when he was grounded with discipline in all its aspects, where he honed his skills to become one of the country’s best university players.

Lastly, Baclao underscored to the crowd of young people never to regret what happened in the past because “yesterdays a history, the future is still a mystery and the present is a gift.”

Baclao proved his best recently as he led the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles in capturing the collegiate UAAP Finals Basketball championship against the De La Salle University Green Archers 62-51 at Araneta Coliseum where he earned the titles Most Defensive Player of the Year and Season 71 Finals MVP. He also bagged the Smart Awards for Outstanding Performances during the game as MVP and recipient of the M.V. Pangilinan Cup.* (rrm/aipro)
